Eagles Sports Update

By Brian Gibson, Athletic Director and Football Coach —

The Van Horn Eagles traveled to Wink on Saturday night to face off
against another 2A opponent. The Slaton Tigers came into the game with
an explosive offense and a very aggressive defense.

Slaton took control of the game early with 28 first half points to
the Eagles 6, but once again the scoreboard did not reflect the action
on the field. The Van Horn Eagles fought the Tigers for four complete
quarters, before falling 42–6.

The Eagles showed a lot of improvement, tons of heart and character, and great sportsmanship.

The offense once again struggled in the red zone finishing off
drives. However, there were more consistent plays made by the offense as
the passing game began to find its rhythm.

The comparatively undersized Eagle offensive line were relentless in
protecting the quarterback and did a much better job creating some
running lanes for the Eagle backs. Offensively, the Eagles were led
statistically by Fabian Baeza and his 105 yards passing, with the
majority of that yardage to Jacob Ontiveros (92 yards receiving) due in
large part to the time Nando Subia, Matthew Acosta, Luis Gonzalez,
Miguel Velez, Kyle Seyffert, Roman Rocha, Jaime Santa Cruz, and Carlos
Tarango provided up front. Consistency is the focus of our offense as we
work to develop our identity as a unit and gain valuable experience for
our district slate.

Defensively, the Eagles were once again up to the task. Despite the
external appearance of the scoreboard, the Eagles swarmed to the ball
all night, and created a lot of havoc in the Tiger backfield. There were
still some breakdowns in assignment that can be corrected and several
missed tackles that all led to big scoring plays by the Tigers.

Leading the Eagle attack on defense this week were David Mapula (9
tackles), Ryan Martinez (12 tackles), Daniel Quintana (9 tackles), Sam
Rivera (10 tackles), and Jeremy Virdell (6 tackles, 1 INT returned for a
Touchdown).

Van Horn will travel to Odessa on Saturday, September 14 to play
Seagraves in another non – district contest. Game time is slated for
7:30 pm, and the Eagles will be the Visitors in this contest.

The Eagles would love to see as many Red and Grey fans making the
trip as possible as we support each other on this journey of a season.
