VHHS Academic Teams attend UIL meets

BY PAM YOUNG

The VHHS Academic teams have been active over the past few weekends attending meets in Sonora, Monahans, and Wink.

On Feb. 6, the Academic Teams traveled to the Sonora Invitational, which has the distinction of being the oldest continuous speech tournament in the state. This year, about 20 schools competed in the meet, and our students did very well.

Kyle Seyffert won 2nd place in Persuasive Speaking, Noah Garcia won 4th place in Varsity Prose Interpretation, and Darden Morris and Luna Urias made it to the semi-finals in Varsity Prose and Varsity Poetry Interpretation.

Alyssa Corrales also competed in Persuasive Speaking, narrowly missing the finals. These students gained valuable experience, and were able to see some of their competitors they are likely to meet at the Regional Meet in April or May.

On Feb. 7 the remaining Academic Teams traveled to the Monahans Meet, where everyone except the speakers competed. Darden Morris took 3rd place in Headline Writing and 6th in Spelling. Manav Patel took 4th place in Calculator Applications.

On Feb. 14, our Academic Teams visited the Wink Invitational, where Darden Morris won 4th Place  and Michael Robinson won 5th in Spelling; Luna Urias won 6th Place in Literary Criticism, Carlos Guerrero took 2nd Place in the Social Studies event and Darden Morris also won 2nd Place in Headline Writing.

Jackie Santa Cruz won 1st Place and Isaac Baeza won 3rd Place in 9th Grade Mathematics.  In 10th Grade Calculator,  Leslie Jones placed 1st, and Sahil Damniwalla took 3rd Place and Junior Manav Patel won 1st Place overall.

These students will travel to Plains on March 7 with hopes of winning even more medals, ribbons, and perhaps even a trophy. The District UIL Academic Meet will be held on March 28 in Fort Hancock.
