Where are They Now? – Gayla Owen

Editor’s note: This feature is dedicated to profiling Van Horn High School Alumni and updating locals on what became of them after graduation.  The Advocate welcomes information for publication on VHHS Alumni and will try to highlight two Van Horn Eagles every week.

Gayla Owen is a 1990 graduate of Van Horn High School who has recently been seen back on her home turf at Culberson Hospital after a long absence.  After graduation, Gayla attended Southwest Texas College in Uvalde for a year before returning to Van Horn briefly to work while attending classes at Sul Ross State University.  She moved to Alpine, where she worked as director of the children’s program at MHMR for two years.  She also did medical transcription in Alpine and San Angelo at Shannon Hospital before deciding to attend nursing school at Ranger College in Brownwood.  Gayla received her nursing degree in 1999 and worked for one year in Lubbock at St. Mary’s Hospital before moving back to Alpine, where she has worked at Big Bend Medical Center for the last 14 years.  Gayla is now back where she started, at Culberson Hospital, but now working as a nurse while going to school to earn her RN degree.

Gayla is most proud of her two children, Jacee, 18 years old and Garrett, aged 12.  In her spare time, she enjoys the outdoor life, camping, fishing, spending time at “the ranch” and travelling with her family.  Welcome back, Gayla!
