The Van Horn Eagles made the 510-mile roundtrip drive to Mertzon last Friday to take on the Irion County Hornets for their second District game. The Eagles played great on all sides of the ball and scored twice in the first quarter, and then five more times in the second quarter for a total of 46 first half points. The 61-30 win moves them to an overall record of 4-4, and a perfect 2-0 in District play.

The explosive offense was led by SR QB Rafael Rodriguez who finished the night passing 6/11, 150 yards passing, 25 yards rushing, and 4 touchdowns. SR WR Luis Escajeda led all receivers hauling in six passes for 123 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown reception. SR RB Ernest Friel was five yards short of back to back 100 yard games, and finished up with 10 rushes for 95 yards and a touchdown.

The hard hitting defense anchored by JR Isaac Baeza and SR Damien Tarango only gave up one touchdown in the lopsided first half. The duo also combined for 12 solo tackles, and assisted on 12 others. Alex Urias (30-yards) and Jose Baeza (70 yards) each returned interceptions for Eagle touchdowns, and SR Landon Drake recovered a fumble.

Offense Coordinator Coach Brock said, “The Eagle offense clicked early on in the game and didn’t let up. Led by a strong offensive line performance, several eagles crossed the goal line multiple times throughout the game. We expect to carry this strong performance into next week as we take on the Braves.”

The Eagles will host perennial foe, the Iraan Braves, this Friday for the final home game of the season. The Braves will come to town also 2-0 in district play, and undefeated in the regular season. We need our stands to be filled with loud fans wearing red, and cheering for the Eagles in their biggest game of the season. There will also be free t-shirts an seat cushions given away prior to the game courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. Mike Tyrrell.
