Last Friday, the Eagle track team participated in the Rio Grande Relays held in Sanderson, Texas. It was a long, successful day for both the Eagles and Lady Eagles. Despite aggressive winds, the teams both walked away with faster times, an impressive amount of hardware, and even a team championship plaque.
On the Lady Eagles side, Clarissa De La O, Tanya Tarango, Ruby Valdez, and Iris Urias walked away with two silver medals in the 4×100 (55.52) and 4x200m (2:01.99) relays. For the mile relay, Iris Urias, Ruby Valdez, Elidia Mendez, and Tanya Tarango placed 3rd with a time of 4:51.96. The ladies walked away with 3rd place overall. Great job, ladies!
The Eagles flew away with the team champion title. For the field events, Emilio Tarango took the silver in both discus and shotput. Bryce Virdell placed 2nd in long jump. Elijah Gaines also placed 2nd in triple jump, and he was the champion in the high jump. To kick off the running events, in the 4x100m relay, Rudy Estrada, Felipe Gonzales, Caleb Hinojos, and Aaron Urias placed first with a time of 45.86. In the 4x200m relay, Caleb Hinojos, Felipe Gonzales, Bryce Virdell, and Aaron Urias took the gold with a time of 1:38.26. In the mile relay, the team of Caleb Hinojos, Felipe Gonzales, Elijah Gaines, and Bryce Virdell placed first with a time of 3:47.9. Finally, to finish off the running events, Elijah Gaines took bronze in the 100m dash. As previously stated, the Eagles earned the title of team champions for the second meet in a row! Way to run!
This Thursday and Friday, come out and watch the JH and HS Eagle track teams soar at the Memorial Relays right here in Van Horn. The JH meet begins at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, and the HS meet will begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Congratulations to all of our runners in Sanderson.
