Eagle Sports Update

By Brian Gibson, Athletic Director and Football Coach —

Coming off of a season opening win against the Alpine 7th Grade Bucks
at Buck stadium in Alpine on Sept. 12, the Eagle Junior High Football
team hosted the Alpine 8th Grade Bucks at Eagle Field.

Alhough the Eagles fell short 20 – 0, the Eagles showed tremendous
improvement from the first week of the season and continued to play hard
throughout the entire game. The JH Eagles will play host to the McCamey
Badgers on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 5 pm.

Despite working through, around, and in the much needed rain,
Homecoming festivities played on displaying great school spirit and
enthusiasm.

The Eagle football team did the same as they hosted the Tornillo
Coyotes at Eagle Field. Regardless of the outcome, an 18 – 0 loss by the
Eagles, the entire week was exciting and a tremendous amount of support
and school spirit was on display.

On the field, the Eagles played hard for four quarters and continue
to improve daily. Resiliency was at full strength for the Eagles on
Friday night and the young squad rallied behind each other as each
member of the team did their part to fill the void of seven teammates
missing in action.

Leading the way for the Eagles on offense was Jeremy Virdell who had
10 receptions for 50 yards and Sam Rivera chipped in 30 yards rushing in
the second half. Defensively, Daniel Quintana continued to have a great
season leading the Eagles in tackles with 16 supported by 10 from Sam
Rivera. Linebackers must always be grateful of those up front that
demand double teams and create chaos as Jacob Ontiveros, Carlos Tarango,
Matthew Acosta, and Miguel Velez did all night.

The Eagles will travel to McCamey Friday night to tangle with the
Badgers in the district opener for both teams. Game time is slated for
7:30 pm, and the Eagles would love to see as many Red and Grey fans
packing the stands as we support each other on this journey.
