Another step to can hunger

By Tony McCreery —

Rotary Club, CCAISD, and Culberson Hospital make a very successful team! This year the Van Horn Rotary Club, CCAISD, and Culberson Hospital teamed up to Can Hunger! The Can Hunger food drive took place throughout October and ended on Nov. 8.

Every item collected is given to the Culberson County Food Bank which in turn distributes the food to needy families in Culberson County every month.

During the months of November and December the Food Bank has a difficult time providing for all of the needs in Culberson County.

This year, the young people at the school and the hospital employees truly showed that they refuse to allow families to go without food this holiday season.

The Rotary Club, which celebrates 75 years of service in Van Horn this year, sponsors the food drive and offers a pizza party to the winning elementary school class.

Eagle Elementary stepped up to the challenge to Can Hunger by donating an incredible 877 items! The winning grade for the pizza party is the 1st grade. First grade rallied together and supplied 353 items between the two classes. These young men and young ladies worked very hard to make sure their community is taken care of. The second and third grade classes came in next with the second grade donating 152 items and the third grade donating 141 items. All of the grades participated and made this year a great success. Thank you Eagle Elementary for your help, service, and contribution to Culberson County.

The Secondary School Campus offered their students an incentive of an extended lunch for a donation of $2.00 or canned goods. Our kids from fifth grade through high school came together to ensure that they will

not be out-done by the elementary school. Together our kids on the Secondary Campus donated 423 cans and $424.60.

The money is extremely helpful because our Food Bank can purchase food from the El Paso food bank for $0.10 per pound so the money will go a very long way. Great job Secondary School!
