Fatal accident on I-10 slows traffic to a crawl

One fatality was reported on Monday during an early morning collision on I-10 west near Allamoore between mile markers 123-124.

One lane of traffic on I-10 west was shut down, including the access roads to clean up the massive amount of debris.

Salvador Lozano Delgado, 48, Chihuahua, Mexico, the driver of a white pick-up truck towing utility trailer, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, Manuel Victor Vargas, also of Chihuahua,38, was airlifted and transported to University Medical Center in El Paso. As of press time, he remained in critical condition, according to Sergeant Elizabeth Barney, Texas Department of Public Safety in El Paso.

Law enforcement officers were called to the scene on Monday at 4:17 a.m.to respond to an accident that involved three vehicles, including the vehicle driven by Mr. Delgado and two truck tractor semi-trailers.

 According to information provided by Ms. Barney, the preliminary information shows that Mr. Delgado was located on the right shoulder of I-10 near mile marker 123 facing westbound.

As Mr. Delgado was entering back onto I-10, a yellow truck tractor trailer carrying refrigerated goods struck Mr. Delgado’s vehicle, causing Mr. Delgado’s vehicle to jack-knife into both lanes of the interstate. Subsequently, a white truck tractor trailer struck Mr. Delgado’s truck.

Alvin R. Lamberty, driving the white semi-trailer, is from Killeen, and he had non-incapacitating injures. He was transported to Del Sol Medical Center. His passenger, Issac T. Elder of Waco, was in the sleeper compartment, and he suffered no injuries.

Mark W. Moore, the driver of the white semi-tractor trailer had incapacitating injuries, and he was transported to University Medical Center. I-10 remained partially closed until about 1:30 p.m. on Monday. The accident remains under investigation.
