VHHS students excel in debate and academics

BY PAM YOUNG

VHHS has qualified two students for the 2014-2015 University Interscholastic
League State Cross Examination Debate Meet to be held March 16-17 at the
University of Texas at Austin. They are Camille Uranga and Kyle
Seyffert,VHHS Juniors.

“UIL Debate competition motivates students and provides them with
practical application for the skills they are developing, ” said Jana
Riggins, UIL State Debate Director. This year's debate topic prompted students
to research and form their own thoughts and opinions on the real world issue of
the U. S.' exploration and development of the Earth's oceans.

Through participation at the Academic State Meet, students qualify for Texas
Interscholastic League Foundation scholarships. Since its inception in 1959,
the TILF has provided more than $28 million to more than 18,000 students.
This year TILF expects to award an estimated 600 new and renewed grants, valued
at more than $1 million. These funds are available because of donations and
grants from foundations and individuals. One hundred percent of each dollar
TILF receives goes directly to scholarships, with no administrative or other
expenses being deducted.

On March 7, 19 VHHS students and their sponsors traveled to
the Plains High School UIL Academic Meet with 34 West Texas schools
competing. Math, Calculator, Science and
Writing/Journalism events were divided into small school (1A-3A,) and large
