Van Horn Jubilee 2015: A West Texas town reunion!

Every five years the residents and former residents of Van Horn get together for three days on the third weekend in June and have a Jubilee. The Jubilee was started in 1990 by Charles Hutchins, a former student then later a teacher at Van Horn High School and it was decided then to have one every five years.

The 1990 Jubilee was a great success. The 1995 Jubilee had a smaller turnout.  In 2000, a committee was formed chaired by Lyndon McDonald, and as a result of these efforts, in 2000, about 2,000 persons were in attendance. It was GREAT!! We launched a new  website VanHornJubilee.com for Jubilee 2005  and Jubilee 2005 and Jubilee 2010 were also successes, and our attendance grew a little bit each time.

Our goal is to double the population of Van Horn for a couple of days, and in 2010, we came close. We had more than 1,600 people sign in at the Convention Center and Visitors Bureau in the first two days. No invitations are required. If you ever lived in Van Horn, even if it was for one day or a lifetime, you are invited. Even if you only passed through town on your way to somewhere else, stop in and see how we do things in West Texas.

We update our website on changes and activities, so check it out often. The site has an activities page, history and memorials pages as well as photos from the last Jubilee. There is also a Contact Us page where you can ask questions, leave comments, and list names to be added to the Memorial Page. Names submitted to the Memorial page will be read aloud and honored at the Memorial Ceremony at Eagle Field at 9 p.m. on Saturday June 19.

If you haven’t been to a Jubilee, you don’t know what you have missed. There will be lots of laughter, a few tears, and a great time. If you have questions, please contact us at VanHornJubilee.com or call the Van Horn Convention and Visitors Bureau (432) 283-2050.
