Lady Eagles show strength at Way Out West Tournament

Congratulations to the Lady Eagle Varsity Volleyball team for their efforts last weekend at the W.O.W. (Way Out West) Van Horn Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Eagles are this year’s tournament champions. It’s the second year in a row that the Lady Eagles take the Championship. The Lady Eagles defeated the Sierra Blanca Vaqueros and the Tornillo Coyotes in the first rounds. Then they took down Kermit in a stellar semi-final match posting scores of 26-24, 27-25.
In the championship round, the Lady Eagles came through once again after digging themselves in a hole. They came back and beat Ft. Hancock 26-24, 25-23 to take the championship match. Both Kermit and Ft. Hancock played up against us this weekend, but even when the Lady Eagles were in trouble, we never backed down and kept pushing.

Their mental stamina and strength are excellent right now and will continue to get stronger as the year progresses. They played their hearts out.

Congratulations to the Lady Eagles who received well-deserved accolades for their efforts in this year’s volleyball tournament:

Tournament MVP: Renee Rivera
All Tournament: Clare Mendez
Outstanding Hitter: Calise Cottrell
Outstanding Defensive Player: Cami Uranga

Thanks to everyone that helped make the tournament a huge success. Special shout out to my parents, Carlos and Yolanda Urias, for the amazing food, and to my family for all their help.

Thanks to Coach Gibson, Ms. Benavidez, Ms. Gibson and Ms. Engle for their support and encouragement. Thank you to our maintenance crew for keeping our gym spotless. Thank you to my assistant coaches for being the best in the world and to my managers for staying on top of things. It takes a village and Van Horn is the best!
