Obituary – Maugie Turner

Maugie Hoyt Turner, 86, of Van Horn died Monday, September 14, 2015 at Culberson Hospital in Van Horn. He was born February 27, 1929 in Seminole, Texas to Ona Belle and Maugie Lee Turner. 

He was reared and educated in Seminole. He met Jimmie Joyce McNabb in Seminole and they were married there on November 2, 1946. The Turners moved to Eunice, NM where he worked as a pumper for Ohio Oil Company, later becoming Marathon, for 24 years. In 1973 the Turners moved to Van Horn to the E.V. Ranch and began a career in ranching. Jimmie died in 1997 and Hoyt retired in 1998. 

Mr. Turner was a member of Texas Southwest Cattle Raisers Association. While in Eunice the Turners were 4H leaders for Lea County. Hoyt was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Eunice, NM and Van Horn, Texas where he served on the board. Mr. Turner served as treasurer on the Christian Shelter in Van Horn.

Hoyt is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three sisters; Margie Lee Cockrill, Oleta Macy, and Bobbie Jo Gurley.

Survivors include his sons Chanley Turner and Monty Turner of Van Horn; grandson Cory Turner and his wife Jessica of Tyler, Texas and great grandchildren Trey and Shelby Grace Turner of Tyler; his sister, Bea Weir and her husband James of Denver City.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Jerry Donovan officiating. Graveside will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Gains County Cemetery in Seminole.
