Debate Team takes 1st

By Pam Young

At the risk of seeming redundant, the VHHS debate team made up of Camille Uranga and Kyle Seyffert and their sponsors/coaches travelled to Amarillo Friday so that Cami and Kyle could compete   in the Top of Texas Swing Tournament held by Randall High School of Canyon, Texas,  along with Amarillo Tascosa High.

Friday afternoon and evening found the speakers competing in individual evebts: Camille in Pietry Interpretation,  and Kyle in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. This portion was hosted by Randall H.S. but all the events were geld at Amarillo Tascosa High.

Kyle made it to the Semi-finals, where he got tripped up by some details. He did extremely well, though. There were 48 speakers in hix event, & he was among the top 12.. Cami made it to the Finals, which were held on Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. She also did quite well. She was fightin off a cold and sore throat. She received 8th place out of 58 interpreters in Poetry.

After going to get some breakfast,  the devaters returned to Tascosa High for the Tascosa pirtion of the meet. The Randall meet had onlyindividual events, but Tascosa High had CX Debate, starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.

Our local kids just kept winning round after round. At the end of the day, and I do mean the end, they won first place at the meet! And, we believe they qualified for the Texas Forensic Association’s state meet, which will be held at Georgetown,  TX, the weekend before the UIL state meet March 14th and 15th. , for which both they and our relatively new debaters, Ashanti Garcia and Steven Urias, have already qualified.

All of these students make us extremely proud,  and please congratulate them heartily when you see them!

This weekend all our speakers will travel to Seminole to compete in their Tournament I’ll
