The Eagle Golf teams have competed in a couple of tournaments in the last couple of weeks. Last week they competed in the Alpine Invitational and this week they competed in the Wink Invitational. The girls continue to improve each week but still need to work on their consistency and short game. With only 4 of them on the team, they really have to focus in order to improve their team score. Junior, Lezlie Jones came way with 5th place in Alpine. Her irons were hot but a few putting errors set her back some. The boy’s team came out confident in Alpine and came away with 3rd place. Collectively, their short game was much better. Leading the pack was Junior, Rafael Rodriguez, who shot an 89, earning him 5th place, overall. Sophomore, Daniel Solis came in 10th place with a score of 94.
The Wink Invitational was a bit more challenging as the Eagles battled the ferocious wind. Both teams hung on and finished in the middle of the pack, 4 out of 8 teams. The girls improved on their team score this round and are working hard to keep their momentum. Lezlie Jones tied for 3rd place with Monahans’ #1, out of a field of 52 girls. She posted a score of 96 even amidst the windy madness. The boy’s team improved even more on their short game this round. They missed 3rd place by only 10 strokes! They kept their focus today and are slowly but surely chipping away at their team score. It is definitely a great thing to see as these boys keep working hard. Senior, Joseph Vorheis and Junior, Rafael Rodriguez were our top boy golfers at Wink. They both tied with a 92; however Joseph earned 10th place after a scorecard playoff, out of a field of 54. We have our final tournament of the season before district, next Monday in Marfa. It will be the last time we face our local rivals before the Regional Tournament. As a team, the Eagle Golfers must continue to focus and find confidence in their game and in each stroke they take. Well done, Eagle Golfers! Keep grinding!
