Lezlie Jones achieved significant success last year as the youngest athlete from Van Horn High School to ever play in the State Golf Championship. This year, her goal was to build on last year’s accomplishments and push herself even further. She had a greater mission in mind at this year’s regional tournament. Her dedication and mental strength gave her the confidence she needed to secure her chance at another run at state, but her ultimate goal this year was to come away with the title of regional champion.

Jones finished the first round carding a score of 81, her best tournament round and all-time best front 9 score of 38. She used that momentum to mentally reload for the next round. She maintained a great pace throughout the second round, staying focused and strong. The pressure that comes with the second round can be difficult but Jones kept her composure through her highs and lows. It’s not always easy to come back after a bad shot or bring the adrenaline down after a really great shot, but Jones certainly makes it look easy.

Jones finished the second round carding a score of 83, posting her best two-day tournament score of 164. She had some excellent par saves and some amazing golf shots. She gave herself chances this year for even more pars and birdies. However, she came up just short on some par putts, inches short. In the end, she was just three strokes shy of capturing the title of regional champion. The efforts made by Jones were remarkable and have set the pace as she heads into the state rounds.

Jones was this year’s 1st place medalist at the 2016 Region I-2A Golf Championship, qualifying her for the UIL Golf State Championship on April 25th and 26th at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin, Texas. When asked, “How do you feel about having another run at state?” Jones says, “This is a second chance to show what I am really capable of. I am very thankful to have this chance again and I thank God every day for giving me another opportunity to compete in this sport because it has taught me a lot and has made me a stronger individual.”

Jones, a junior, will make history next week as the only athlete from Van Horn High School to ever compete in the UIL Golf State Championship two years in a row. Jones goes on to say, “I think I am this year’s ‘dark horse.’ No one is going to expect me, but this year I am going to surprise my competition. As state gets closer, I know that I am as ready as I will ever be. Last year I was just testing the water. This year, I am better prepared and ready, both physically and mentally. I’m going for the gold!” As Lezlie’s coach, I am already proud of her and well aware of her capabilities. I know she will push even harder this year because of the confidence she carries. She knows what to expect going into the state tournament and I know she will fight to the finish.
