Valentine Pirate, Elvis Tarango, competed in the 9A District Track Meet in Van Horn on April 14th and came home with two gold medals in the 100 and 200 meter events. He will now represent the district in the Area Meet in Van Horn on April 21 in an attempt to qualify for the Regional Track Meet to be held on April 29 and 30 in San Angelo. Should Tarango finish in the top two at the Regional Meet, he would be qualified to the run in the State Meet in Austin in early May.

Tarango won the 100 meters in a time of 10.84 seconds, a personal record for him in that event and one of the best times in the state in the Class A division. He won the 200 in a time of 23.19 seconds which also appears to be among the best times across the state in the Class A division which is made up of schools that play 6-Man football and have an enrolment of fewer than 104.5 students in high school.

Tarango also finished fourth in the shot pu t with a throw of 36 feet 10 inches, 3/4 of an inch out of third place.

Tarango was joined by two freshmen girls from Valentine that competed in the throwing events. Angeni Kemp and Francis Sanchez both made it to the finals in the shot put but neither of the girls placed. Tarango is a junior this year.
