FFA Van Horn Chapter holds end-of-year banquet

By Leslie Wilson, FFA Reporter

The Van Horn FFA held their first banquet, which will become an annual event, on Friday May 13.  There were 15 members and approximately 50 guests in attendance.  Dr, Chris Estepp, Department Chair of Animal Science Department at Sul Ross State University, gave the speech.  A brisket dinner was served to all guests courtesy of many community donations.  We had twelve students earn their Greenhand Degrees with Beatriz Marta receiving the Star Greenhand Award which is the highest award a Greenhand can receive.  We also had 6 students earn their Chapter Degree which is the next step with Jaime Santa Cruz receiving the Star Chapter Member and Dustin Wilson receiving the Star Chapter Farmer awards.  Dustin Wilson will also receive the Lonestar Degree, which is the highest degree in the State at the Texas FFA State Convention in July.  Mrs. Sondra McCoy, Mrs. Debbie Engle and Mrs. Kittie Gibson received Honorary Chapter degrees for their tremendous support for the program.  Mrs. Dalia Benavides was also honored for her support.  Beatriz Marta received her FFA Sweetheart buckle and Jaime Santa Cruz was honored with the Michael Barrandey Top Hand Award.  The parents and community was also honored for their tremendous support and commitment to our chapter.  Finally we honored all our competitive teams that worked really hard this year for all their accomplishments.

The FFA would like to thank the entire community for allowing us to do all we do donating both time and financial support.  Without the support of our parents, school administration and our community, Van Horn, Mr. Wilson and the entire FFA family, we would not be able to accomplish what we have.
