Volleyball update

From Rob Segura with contributions from Coach Urias Facebook posts

The Van Horn Volleyball team was in Alpine on Saturday and Fort Stockton on Tuesday.  Coach Urias stated, “Our JV team worked hard today and came away with a win against Alpine’s Freshman Team. They battled hard against the JV team but came up short. These girls are really coming along. They’re really understanding the game now which allows us to really start engraining the fundamentals”.  She continued, “The Varsity team came out on fire the first set but eventually fell short.  It’s unfortunate that our team continues to struggle mentally.  However, we will continue to grind and work out the kinks. Sometimes things have to fall apart in order to be put back together, again. We have much faith in this team and we will continue to push towards our goals, one day at a time.  Props to Alpine on playing a great game under the circumstances.  We are grateful to have been able to play today.”

The Lady Eagles played tough Tuesday against some big Fort Stockton teams.  The JV teams had much better ball movement and are really working well together.  Their defense is really coming along and they’re seeing the ball movement much better on the opposing side.  It’s really exciting to watch these young ladies develop.

The Varsity team came out a bit timid in the beginning sets but a few excellent plays set the tone for an awesome win in the third set. After being almost shut out, the Lady Eagles dug deep and made some excellent plays. Their confidence at that point in the match is a first for us this season!  It was a great thing to witness.  Our team has been through the ringer this season and has had so many set-backs and for them to put up a fight like they did is very promising.  They just need to keep believing in themselves as much as we believe in them.  We have one more game before the start of district play.

We play at home next Tuesday against Tec de Monterrey.  They will come with heat and scrappy skills, just what we need before our big match up against Fort Hancock, next Friday.
