Eagles upset #10 Seagraves

By Rob Segura

The Eagles of Van Horn traveled more than 450 miles last week to take on the Seagraves Eagles.  Going into the game, Seagraves was ranked number 10 in the Texas Division 2A-2 rankings with a 4-0 record while Van Horn went into battle with a 1-3 record.  What many thought to be an offensive shootout turned out to be a low scoring defensive game.  Van Horn’s defense struck first with a Seagraves tipped ball being intercepted by #9 Landon Drake and taken in for a quick pick six for the Eagles.  Minutes later #22 Alex Urias picks up a fumble and strode in for another Eagles’ touchdown making the score 12 to 0 with only 7:42 showing in the first quarter.

The start of the second quarter showed the same score until Seagraves finally punched the ball in for their first touchdown.  This did not come until halfway through the second quarter.  Seagraves scored on the extra point attempt making the score 12 to 7.  The Eagles held up on great defensive play and hustled to turn to the locker room to regroup with the score still 12 to 7.  The 3rd quarter was scoreless until Seagraves scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion with 3:47 showing on the clock, making the score 15 to 12.  Seagraves attempted to move the ball in the 4th quarter but was spoiled by an interception by Eagle Rafael Rodriguez.  The Eagles marched down the field with Rafael Rodriguez scoring a touchdown to make the score 18 to 15.  The point after attempt was blocked and run back the entire football field for a 2-point score by the Seagraves to make the score 18 to 17.  Seagraves received the ball but were quickly stopped by a fierce Eagles defense.  With four plays to work with, the Seagraves threw an incomplete pass and the quarterback was sacked 3 times.  Seagraves turned the ball over on downs and time ran out with a surprising upset Eagles upset and a final score of 18 -17.

The final score ended in the Mighty Eagles 18 and the Seagraves Eagles 17. Seagraves’ loss dropped them to 15th in the state with the Van Horn Eagles moving up to 57th in the state.  Van Horn continues their play tomorrow as they host McCamey in this week’s Homecoming festivities.
