Obituary— Alicia Gomez Reyes

Mrs. Alicia Gomez Reyes, of Van Horn, Texas, earned her reward next to Our Father when she passed away on January 14, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones. Mrs. Reyes was born on February 2, 1937 in Van Horn to David Gomez and Felipa Benavidez.

Alicia attended Van Horn schools and was a long-time member of Van Horn’s close-knit community. She worked in the food business most of her life and served and greeted customers with a cheerful smile and a kind welcoming attitude. Alicia had a quick wit, a bubbly personality, and a strong work ethic. Her special talent was singing. She passed her appreciation of music on to her children and grandchildren. Her favorite song of endearment, “Chingarito”, carries on, as her family continues to grow. She was immensely proud of her family and leaves behind beautiful cherished memories.

She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Van Horn. Through her Catholic faith, she attended the Cursillo where she earned her Cursillo crucifix and was a proud member of the Guadalupanas of her church. She watched as a proud mother from the sidelines, bleachers, and stadium seats and rooted as her children participated in various activities. Her love of the Dallas Cowboys had her sporting their sports attire and cheering them on from the other side of the television set. Alicia was always up for a good, competitive game of “Loteria”.

A doting and dedicated mother, Alicia raised her eight children as a single parent. Her children are Norma Gary of Odessa, Texas; Ray Reyes of Van Horn; Ruben Reyes of El Paso, Texas; Bobby Reyes of Midland, Texas; Laura Jean Reyes of Van Horn; Sylvia Davis of Odessa, Gracie Gomez Alvarado (deceased), and Ivonne Gomez Oñate of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is also survived by one sister, Gloria Lopez of Ysleta, Texas and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Reyes was preceded in death by her parents, David and Felipa, her brothers Carlos and Chon Gomez and her beloved daughter Gracie Gomez Alvarado.
