Eagles lose season opener to Crane

By Brian Gibson, Athletic Director and Football Coach —

The Van Horn Eagle Football team faced the 2A Crane Golden Cranes on Friday night at Eagle Stadium.

This was the first Friday night action for many as the Eagles marched
11 newcomers onto the field against a senior-heavy football team.

The outcome of the game, a 41 – 0 win by the Cranes, was a bit
lopsided on the score board, but the action on the field proved
otherwise.

Three big miscues by the Eagles led directly to 21 Crane points, and
two Eagle offensive drives ended deep in Crane territory. The young
Eagles showed a lot of resiliency throughout the game and showed great
improvement.

Defensively, the Eagles swarmed to the ball registering 5 tackles for
loss and five sacks. The new attack style of defense proved productive
and exciting, but there is still a lot of room for improvement,
especially in the “get ‘em on the ground” department. Better tackling
will be the focus of our defense this week.

Offensively, the Eagles struggled early in the contest trying to find
a rhythm in their new no – huddle spread attack trying to build off
their offensive philosophy of 2012.

The Eagle's offensive line in 2013 has five brand new starters, four
sophomores and one senior. As the group up front works to get better and
develop some consistency, the Eagles will be focusing their offensive
attack with more passing than seen in past years.

The second half showed a lot more poise from the Eagle offense as the
Eagles racked up over 100 yards rushing in the half and 40 yards
through the air.

Van Horn will travel to Wink on Saturday, Sept. 7, to play Slaton in
another non–district contest. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm, and the
Eagles will be the visitors in this contest.

The Eagles would love to see as many red and grey fans making the
trip as possible as we support each other on this journey of a season.
