The new courthouse was constructed in 1964. Commissioners had already made the decision to demolish the historic courthouse, for no other reason, other than that the building had fallen into disrepair.
Today, in Texas, counties are eligible to receive millions of dollars in grants to renovate old courthouses. Look at Hudspeth County in Sierra Blanca and Presidio County in Marfa.
