UPDATE 1: MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF, PRONOUNCED DEAD

UPDATE 1: 2:47 P.M.

BY ROBERT MORALES
Theodore Lee Jr, 42, from Petersburg, Indiana, yesterday shot himself in front of local law enforcement officials after being served with a warrant for arrest at a house located at Fourth and Houston Streets. According to Culberson County Sheriff Oscar Carrillo, Mr. Lee was a fugitive from Indiana wanted for robbery charges and sexual crimes. Apparently, Mr. Lee fled Indiana recently and made his way to far West Texas.

He quickly ingratiated himself with a few locals, but it is very likely that Mr. Lee said nothing to his acquaintances about his criminal history in Indiana.

At about 2 p.m. yesterday,  Mr. Carrillo and his deputies went to the house at Fourth and Houston with a warrant to arrest Mr. Lee. According to Mr. Carrillo, it quickly became “an armed stand-off” between Mr. Lee and deputies. Mr. Lee grabbed his gun and shot himself in the head. EMS pronounced him dead a few minutes later.

“We're a very open, very trusting community,” said Mr. Carrillo. “We're used to sometimes leaving our doors unlocked. We are also very good about helping others who need our help, but unfortunately, we don't always know their background.”

WE WILL UPDATE THIS STORY AS WE GATHER MORE FACTS.
