Eagle Band does ice bucket challenge

BY BRIANNA SANCHEZ

On Monday, Aug.  25, the Mighty Eagle Band was nominated by drum major Carlos Guerrero to do the recently trending Ice Bucket Challenge.

The challenge consists of, as one might guess, a bucket full of ice and water and expects the participants to pour the bucket of ice water on themselves. Afterward, the participant challenges other people.

Lately, this challenge has been trending all over the internet to help raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).  ALS is often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” ALS is a disease that affects the nerve cells within the brain and spinal cord. When the cells die, the brain’s ability to process and control functions to the muscles of the body deteriorates resulting in paralysis and in worse cases death.

Many celebrities have accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge to help this cause including Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Bieber and Oprah Winfrey. They’ve donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to hospitals and centers hoping to fight this disease.

The Eagle Band joined these people and millions of others throughout the U.S. in this enjoyable and meaningful challenge.  The entire band got together after their scheduled practice on Monday and gathered as many small buckets as they could, and upon completion of the challenge, band members nominated the art classes, the school board trustees and the CCAISD faculty and staff to do the same.
