Man dies in 18-wheeler accident near Orla

Roy Lee Baker, 47, of Loving, New Mexico, was
killed driving this 18-wheeler on Oct. 19 on a private oil lease road in
northern Culberson County.

The accident occurred at about 1 p.m., according to
Sheriff Oscar Carrillo. Mr. Carrillo said that Mr. Baker worked for Madron
Service Inc., a subcontractor for Cimarex.

The accident took place about 18
miles from Orla, and Mr. Carrillo said that 911 response times tend to be slow
because emergency calls are routed according to the cell phone tower that
transmits the call. In this case, Reeves County EMS responded to the call, but
to reach this isolated area, calls are sometimes routed to Artesia, New Mexico,
Carlsbad and Culberson County. Mr. Carrillo added that it takes about an hour
to reach the Orla oilfields from the surrounding areas. The accident is under
investigation by Culberson County Sheriff's Office and OSHA.
