Eagles defeat Mertzon Irion County 27-21

BY BRIAN GIBSON, AD

The Van Horn Eagles hosted the Irion County Mertzon Hornets in District 5-2A action last Friday night.

In the final home game for Luis Urias, Natan Arrazate, Sam Rivera, and Sammy Quintana, the Eagles proved their toughness and Eagle Pride throughout this game and showed tremendous resiliency in their quest for a district victory.

Scoring first in the first quarter and never trailing, the Eagles played consistently in all three aspect of the game.  The game  was tied late in the fourth quarter at 20 after an Eagle turnover deep in their own territory; however, our Eagles refused to let victory slip from their talons and quickly responded with another touchdown on their ensuing possession.

The Eagles were led defensively by the two senior linebackers Rivera and Arrazate who combined for a total of 24 tackles in the game.  Senior Safety Sammy Quintana thwarted a late first half drive by the Hornets with an interception and chipped in with six tackles.

Offensively, the balanced rushing and passing attack of the Eagles kept the Hornet defense guessing and searching for answers to make stops.  Luis Escajeda led the Eagles with four receptions and 96 yards, while Fabian Baeza led the Eagles rushing attack with 166 yards on 14 carries.

The Eagles travel to Iraan on  Friday to play the Braves in their final regular season game.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.
