Pecos motorist killed in I-10 crash

Filiberto Lopez, 26, an oilfield worker from Pecos, died in a collision with two truck-tractor semi trailers last Saturday on I-10 near mile marker 177.
The accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. He was driving a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup.

According to Sgt. Elizabeth Barney of the El Paso Department of Public Safety, Mr. Lopez was traveling eastbound on I-10 and he lost control of his vehicle because of icy road conditions.

He drifted into the center median, overcorrected and rolled several times. The vehicle landed upside down on the left lane of travel on a hillcrest.

The two tractor trailers, also traveling eastbound, were unable to take evasive action to avoid colliding with Mr. Lopez.

Betty Velez, Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2, declared Mr. Lopez dead. The accident is under investigation.
