Kermit woman killed in rollover accident on I-10, her infant survives

Bertha Alicia Olivares, 40, Kermit, died from injuries sustained on Tuesday in a single-vehicle accident near mile marker 156. The accident happened at 5:28 p.m.

Ms. Olivares was traveling westbound on I-10 in the left lane in a 2000 Ford Expedition when her vehicle experienced a blowout to the right rear tire, said Sgt. Elizabeth Barney of the El Paso Department of Public Safety.

Apparently Ms. Olivares applied heavy pressure on the brakes causing the vehicle to enter into a counter clockwise side skid and exit the highway. After traveling in the center median for about 100 feet, the vehicle began to roll right and top an unknown number of times. The vehicle eventually rested on its top facing southeast.

Ms. Olivares was  transported to Culberson Hospital in critical condition, where she died. Her passenger, a one-year-old infant, was also transported to the hospital with no serious injuries, and she was released to her family. The accident was investigated by Trooper Justin A. Williams.
