Debate Team competes and continues to place

By Pam Young

Saturday,January 23 the VHHS debate teams   competed   at   the O’Donnell   Invitational   Speech   Tournament. It was actually  a UIL Tournament ,   but VHHS took only debsters, because their season is winding down.

The novice team made up of Ashanti  Garcia   and   Steven Urias got 4 more rounds under their belts, finally getting the requisite  number of tournament rounds to qualify them for the State Debate Meet–this means for the first time ever, VHHS will have 2 debate teams competing at State in March!

Kyle Seyffert also competed, but he did so   “maverick style , “ which means he debated solo. It was pretty demanding, and he went undefeated through all 4 rounds. Because they were trying to   wind up the debate contest so that the students could compete in other events. Those running the contest tallied the win/loss record, speaker points, and the records of the competition .  When they had finished, Kyle was awarded 3rd place.

Then he competed in Persuasive Speaking. He made it to the finals in that as well, and won 4th place in that contest.

Ashanti  competed in Editorial   Writing, and   Steven tried the Social Studies contest .  All in all,

a very busy and arduous day!

Next Saturday ,   all the   Academic   UIL students will travel to McCamey hoping to bring home many honors, medals , and trophies!  Reports to follow!
