Elvis Tarango, the only male Valentine Pirate athlete in 2016, had an outstanding weekend of personal records in two different sports. Tarango competed in the Sanderson Relays on Friday, February 26th and finished in second place in the 100 meters in a time of 10.87, a personal best. He ran a 23.20 in the 200 in the prelims, once again a personal record and then finished in third place with a time of 24.08. He also won second in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet 1 1/2 inches.

On Saturday, Tarango travelled to Pecos for his third powerlifting meet of the year and improved his total lift by 80 pounds over his last meet. He finished the day with a total of 1080 pounds in the 148 pound division and moved up from 16th in the region to 7th place which assured him a spot in the regional meet which will be held in Sundown, Texas on March 12th. This is Tarango’s first year to compete in power lifting and on Saturday he set several personal records including a 380 pound squ at, a 250 pound bench, and a 450 pound dead lift.
