More than 30 people were treated to a demonstration at an Open House last Thursday of the “Maverick Robot” by Team 2613 Protobots, which will compete in Dallas on March 23 through the 25.  Maverick was led through a series of precise maneuvers and through a rigorous obstacle course in preparation for their first competition.

According to Adrian Norman, CCAISD Teacher and Team Sponsor, Van Horn will be among 50 international teams from as far away as China and Brazil.  The project is part of a class, “Concepts of Engineering,” which meets daily during the “build” season which ended February 22.  Every competing team gets the same robot kit, but the similarity ends there, with each team responsible for making creative changes in their robot to meet the rigors of the yearly challenge.

VHHS Team 2613 has been fortunate in having access to the knowledge and talents of Blue Origin engineers, especially Ernie Valdez.  In addition, The Bezos Foundation has provided financial assistance.  The Town of Van Horn has also contributed shelving and a rolling tool cart to give the team a more professional appearance. Many of the parents have also contributed countless hours in building mock obstacles to enable the team to train under challenging conditions.

The top three teams in the Dallas completion will earn the right to compete at the National Competition in St. Louis in April.  Team 2613 members includes Joseph Vorheis, Kyle Seyffert, Luna Urias, Michael Robinson, Anna Santa Cruz, Lezlie Jones, Steven Urias, Jr., and Ryan Corralez.2316
