The Van Horn Eagles Baseball Team kicked off the 2016 district campaign against Anthony on Friday, April 1.  The first few innings of the game were close. The Eagles got the bats going and jumped out to a 6-3 lead entering the bottom half of the 7th inning with the tough task of putting the Wildcats away. The Wildcats earned a run after an error and a hit. The Eagles found two outs but were now facing the toughest part of Anthony’s lineup. The Wildcats soon had runners at 2nd and 1st. Anthony’s batter hit a groundball to left field where Daniel Arrazatte fielded the ball and threw to home to throw out the runner. However, catcher James King, cut off the throw and sent a rocket to third baseman, Damien Tarango, for the final out of the game. Fabian Baeza earned the win from the mound. Baeza struck out 13 batters and gave up just one walk. The Eagles combined for 9 hits and 4 RBI’s.  Alex Urias had a big day at the plate with a triple and two stolen bases.

On Tuesday, April 5, the Eagles took on the Fort Hancock Mustangs in their second district game of the season. The Eagles combined for 15 hits and 10 RBI’s against the Mustangs. Urias, Tarango, Luis Escajeda, and Matthew Acosta each had a double while Juan Zamora earned his first triple of the season. On the mound for the Eagles, Escajeda fanned 8 batters and gave up just 3 runs. With the win, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 district record and a 5–8 overall record. The Eagles will host the McCamey Badgers on Friday, April 8 with first pitch set for 5:00 p.m.
