ALPINE, Texas- Troy Canaba has been named Sul Ross State University head volleyball coach in an announcement by Sul Ross Director of Athletics Bobby Mesker, Friday (Jan. 13).

Canaba takes over for Dewayne Roberts who stepped down as volleyball coach in December to accept an academic advisor position at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM.

Canaba will serve as softball and volleyball coach.

“This is an exciting opportunity and I’m ready for the challenge,” Canaba said. “It’s always been a dream of mine to coach at the college level and now I have the privilege of coaching my two favorite sports.”

“I’m grateful to coach Mesker for entrusting the volleyball coaching position to my care and I’m looking forward to bringing the program back to a competitive level,” he said.

“Troy brings such a wealth of knowledge and experience not only as a coach but as a teacher of the game,” Mesker said. “His familiarity with Sul Ross as a current coach and former student-athlete will serve him well in the recruiting process.”

“His leadership abilities have been proven and we are ready for him to lead our program,” he said.

Canaba coached volleyball and softball at Alpine High School for 11 seasons before being hired at Sul Ross as the fourth head coach of the Lady Lobo softball program in 2015. As volleyball coach at AHS, Canaba compiled a record of 178-67.

A native of Sierra Blanca, Canaba played football and basketball and participated in track and field and golf. He earned All-State honors as a quarterback and participated in the Texas 6 Man All-Star Game following his senior season.

Canaba played basketball for the Lobos for two years earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He returned as a graduate assistant for the basketball team under Dr. Roger Grant while assisting with the volleyball and softball teams under coach Rick Garcia.

After graduation, Canaba spent two years as athletics director at Marathon High School, coaching volleyball, girls’ basketball and track and field.
