The Van Horn Eagles traveled to Monahans last Friday to square off against the Seagraves Eagles for the Bi-District Championship. The Eagles were defeated by Seagraves 46-26 in regular-season play and were eager to avenge their loss, this time they outlasted their opponent to hang on for the 8-6 win. The Eagles will now face-off against the Gruver Greyhounds for the Area Championship tomorrow at Frenship High School in Wolfforth, TX.

Head Coach Brock Tyrrell said, “We can’t begin to express how proud we are of these young men. They came out tonight, gave all they had for one another, never gave up, and kept the faith. The team, coaches, and players believed in one common goal and we achieved that goal. Outstanding efforts on both sides of the ball were key to this victory. Another week of outstanding hustle, hard work, and dedication is necessary this week. I have no doubt that our team will give their best. It is always a great day to be an eagle! Eagle pride never dies!”

Seagraves drew first blood and scored on the opening drive, but were unsuccessful on the two-point attempt try. Both teams went back and forth in the first half, and the Eagles went into halftime down 6-0.

Defensive Coordinator Luis Garcia said, “The defensive effort was outstanding, and we held a good Seagraves offense to under 150 yards. We are going to have to duplicate this effort against Gruver, and go above and beyond team expectations.”

Van Horn came out aggressive in the second half and marched down the field 85 yards to even the score at 6-0. The 2-point attempt was successful and team went ahead 8-6. The momentum shifted towards Van Horn for most of the second half, and the defense played a solid game and kept Seagraves scoreless. The offense was driving down the field and poised to score another touchdown in the final minutes, but a turnover ended the drive. The defense shut down Seagrave’s final attempt to score, and the Eagles let the clock wind down for the win.

The stage is set for the Area Championship, and we once again encourage all past and present Eagles to make the trip. Kickoff is slated for 7:00, see you at the game. It’s a great day to be an Eagle! Eagle Pride Never Dies!
