Obituary—Juanita Rey Mendez

Juanita Rey Mendez, age 68, passed away in Horizon City on December 20, 2019 due to health-related issues. She was born on March 26, 1951 in Guadalupe, Mexico to Fernando Rey Marrufo and Micaela Horcasitas Esparza. She was married at a very young age, in 1966, to her love, Rene Gilberto Mendez. Rene and Juanita were married for 53 years at the time of her death.

Juanita Mendez worked for the Culberson County School District in multiple roles and finally settled into a Cafeteria Supervisor role where she worked for several years and ultimately retired from. She was beloved by her friends, co-workers (Cafeteria Ladies), and students and she loved them just as much or more. There wasn’t a day that went by when she was out in public when someone wasn’t shouting “Hi Juanita!” or “Hi Mom”. Many of the students saw her as a second Mom and kept in touch with her throughout her life soliciting advice and a loving word from her. She was a little league and tennis Mom for several years and was part of the “Cafeteria Lady” team who so kindly took care of others during any and all times in need when she lived in Van Horn before moving to Horizon City.

She was a dedicated wife, mother, friend, caregiver, and most cherished role of all, Grandmother. She so loved her children and grandchildren even more. She enjoyed any and all time with her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her sisters. She had many friends and family that she cherished and enjoyed texting with, face-timing with, and talking on the phone with including Robert and Gilda Morales, Matthew Velez, Nena Carrillo, Eva Mendoza, and so very many others.

Preceding her death are her father Fernando Rey Marrufo, mother Micaela Horcasitas Esparza, and brother Jose Maria Rey “Chema” Horcasitas.

Juanita is survived by her loving husband Rene Gilberto Mendez; her sisters Rosa Isela Bernal Rey, Maria De Los Angeles Alvarez, and Catalina Rivera; her three sons and their wives Hector and Misty Mendez, Rene “Lucky” Mendez, Dr. Espiridion and Alma Mendez; grandchildren Hector Alexander Mendez, Macy Michelle Mendez, Nicolas Robert Mendez, Rene Fernando Mendez, Gabriela Maria Mendez, Christopher Rey Mendez, Madilynn Yvonne Belmonte, Luke Solomon Mendez, Nathanial Kai Mendez, and Tabitha Penelope Mendez.
