Last Friday, at approximately 5:30 a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was called to a one-vehicle crash on State Highway 54, approximately 24 miles north of Van Horn. The preliminary investigation revealed a Nissan Pathfinder, a sports utility vehicle, transporting fifteen (15) undocumented migrants were involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash. Four (4) occupants have died as a result of this crash.

Randy Estuardo Castillo Tocay, the Consul General for Guatemala in Del Rio, said the survivors and those killed were Guatemalan. He said five of the survivors were flown to El Paso and were hospitalized in critical condition. The other six are in stable condition after being transported to Culberson Hospital in Van Horn.

DPS is investigating the traffic crash and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is investigating the immigration status of the undocumented migrants who are reported to have originated from Guatemala prior to entering the US. Culberson County Deputies are also assisting in this incident.
