County approves resolution for refundable deposits

Culberson County commissioners on Monday approved a resolution that will be sent to the state legislature in support of refundable deposits on aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers sold in Texas.

According to the resolution, beverage containers comprise about 31 percent of the waste in the U.S, and account for a “major source of pollution on county roadways and waterways, with taxpayers bearing the brunt of the cleanup cost.”

In addition, refundable deposits “compliment existing curbside and other local recycling programs and increase recycling rates, and deposit systems create job growth in the collection, hauling and remanufacturing of recyclable materials.”
