Obituary: Gracie Alvarado

Gracie Alvarado died on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 in her family home in Van Horn following complications with cancer.  Gracie passed with her husband and two sons at her side.  She was 49 years old. Gracie is survived by her husband of 34 years, Guadalupe Alvarado Jr; her two sons, Josh and Tony, her daughter-in law Valerie and her three grandchildren, Autumn, Josh, and Joel.

She leaves behind her mother Alicia Reyes of Van Horn, and her mother- in-law Frances Alvarado of Van Horn.  Robert Reyes, Ruben Reyes, Ray Reyes, Sylvia Davis, Laura Reyes, Norma Reyes, Bonnie Oñate, and Joanna Rowley were Gracie’s siblings, all from Van Horn.

As a lifelong resident of Van Horn, Gracie was known to have been a strong community supporter, participating and leading groups such as LULAC, Van Horn Sports Booster Club, and Host Mothering multiple international students through the Rotary International Exchange Program.  Gracie’s spiritual relationship was most evident through her participation with her congregation at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.

There, she led groups to help kids become closer to God, also serving as a spiritual role model to many others.  Her most favorite pastime was spending time with the church and her recently befriended ACTS brothers and sisters.  Gracie loved and cared for everyone she knew and those she had just met.  Her spirit of giving has and will continue to serve as an example for our community.  All who knew Gracie are fortunate enough to have cherished their own and special relationship with her, each sharing love as a common attribute.  As it is written in 1 John 4:7, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God”, we should remember to live out her dying wish: “Make sure they love each other…”
