Locals unite to clear airport runway for emergency patient transport

BY CARLOS URIAS

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the job our 2nd tier first responders did two weekends ago in Culberson County.

I received a call from Angie Wyatt on Saturday morning about a critical patient at the hospital that needed to be flown out of town. Apparently, the jet ambulance that flew into our airport slid on the snow and ice that was covering the runways. The pilot hesitated in taking off with a patient in critical condition.  The runway needed to be cleared as soon as possible.

I placed a call to Ruben Flores at TxDot, and immediately, he had a couple of snow plows breaking the ice and clearing the snow. In addition, Town of Van Horn employees (Dion Corralez and staff ) and Culberson County employees Sergio Hinojos and  Ruben Mendez joined in the fray.

Bear in mind that these individuals worked all night long tending to stranded motorist or clearing I-10 and other roadways,  yet they did not hesitate in helping clear the runways to allow the air ambulance to take off . We’re accustomed  to listening to complaints, and the pat-on-the-back are few and far in between.

We are extremely proud of these men for their hard work and dedication. These men are only a small fraction of the individuals who reside in Culberson County who are dedicated to serving not only the people they represent but people that they have never met.  They are true heroes in my book.  Job well done guys!
