Valentine breaks-in Big Bend’s new track and field

By Coach Lonnie Flippen, VISD

The Valentine Junior High Pirates, along with the 6th graders, travelled to Study Butte, the home of Big Bend ISD, on Thursday, March 23 to help the Big Bend Piasanos with the grand opening of their new track. Big Bend ISD is one of a handful of Class A schools west of the Pecos River to have their own track facility. There was a large crowd of locals that came out on a very hot and very windy day for the historic event. A small group of athletes also participated from Marathon.

The 6th graders making the trip included Jordan Miller, Juan Corral, and Erik Rameriz. The 7th grade Pirates were represented by Arleene Corral, Bela Oldham, Nevaeha Mora, and Mickey Siddiq. Darren Biaza also ran for the Pirates. The 8th graders included Jaymie Sanchez, Cecilia Corral, and Samantha Kuhlman. Miguel Rameriz was the only 8th grade boy to run.

The Pirates were very competitive in all events that they participated in including the relays, triple jump, long jump, and s hot and discus. Ribbons were awarded to everyone that finished in 1st through 3rd place and every one of the Pirates came home with ribbons.

The 7th and 8th grade Pirates are preparing for the district meet which will be held in Van Horn on April 6th.
