Van Horn, Texas (June 3, 2021) – Kayla Engle FNP has become the latest addition to the staff of medical providers at Van Horn Rural Health Clinic.

In 2012, Kayla was studying Kinesiology at the University of Texas El Paso when her nephew was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. After witnessing what her sister and family went through and seeing the differences the nursing staff made in his care, Kayla knew that a career change was needed. She finished her degree in Kinesiology and then attended a fast-track nursing school program at UTEP. Graduating from nursing school in 2015, Kayla started her career at Culberson Hospital.

“Working as a nurse at Culberson Hospital was the best decision I could have made,” says Kayla. She continues, “I have enjoyed living in Van Horn, my husband and I have purchased a house with some land, and we enjoy watching the amazing sunrise and sunset in West Texas.” Kayla and her husband have a 3 year-old daughter and another on the way and enjoys watching their daughter grow and learn in this tight knit community.

During her career at Culberson, Kayla continued her nursing education, and has recently been certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner allowing her to see patients. Kayla says, “I love being able to solve a patient’s health problems. Building trust with a patient is important so we can work as a team and start a journey to healthier living.”

Rick Gray, Administrator at Culberson Hospital is glad to have Kayla as a new medical provider. He says, “Kayla has been an excellent nurse, and she will be great in her new role as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She loves the community of Van Horn and enjoys taking care of the people in her town.”

“I want to make a difference in my patient’s lives just like the nurses did with my family during my nephew’s brain cancer treatment almost 10 years ago,” Kayla Says. Her nephew’s story does have a happy ending, he was able to beat brain cancer and just turned 17 this past May.

Kayla is currently seeing patients of all ages at Van Horn Rural Health Clinic. Appointments can be made by calling 432-283-1020.
