City approves construction of Convention Center renovations with Pride General Contractors

BY ROBERT MORALES

City council members on Tuesday approved a $690,000 contract with Pride Contractors of El Paso, for renovations to the Van Horn Convention Center.

The Convention Center will be expanded in size by about 7,500 square feet, and all aspects of the facility will be modernized, including a new kitchen, a new stage and an upgraded sound system.

As a municipality, the Town of Van Horn collects a hotel-motel tax, which helps fund the majority of the operation of the convention center. This project will be financed through state certificates of obligation.

Construction is expected to begin within the next few weeks. When construction is completed, the city will be able to lure small conventions and other tourist-related events to Van Horn.

In other action, council members:
•    Approved a resolution for the 2015-2016 Rural Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $168,000;
•    Approved a request from Alderman Mingo Corralez to have two street lights installed on south side of Honeysuckle Street between Conoly and Laurel Streets;
•    Approved the amendment of Ordinance No. 15-02-376, Title 13: Public Services, Chapter 13.04; Sewer Connections and Drainage Systems, et al. Amend Subsection C: Utility Customer Responsibilities;

•    Voted on a measure to give Gil Potts a deadline of two weeks to complete the redesign and printing of the city brochure. City council will propose legal action if brochures are not printed within the two-week period.
