County discusses reopening offices

By Becky Brewster

Culberson County Commissioners met in regular session on May 11, 2020. County/District Clerk Linda McDonald informed the Court that she plans to open her office in a limited capacity on June 1, 2020.  She requested that the County provide plexiglass barriers and a door to replace the swinging door that leads to the work area of her office.  She noted that the landmen are challenging her office and demanding access to the records since the State has begun its steps to “open up.”  Under the limited access protocol, McDonald will request that visitors wear masks and use the hand sanitizer she will have available. Only one person at a time will be allowed access to the lobby of her office due to the small size of the space.  She noted that in the past, many of the landmen walked freely into the work area, used items off of the staff desks without asking, and ignored the signs that had been posted.  McDonald also asked that the front door be the only open access to the building with someone to take temperatures and monitor entry to the building. It was noted that the Tax Office will also need safety barriers put in place as they begin allowing access to the office.

The Court authorized the distribution of gas cards donated by Chevron to essential employees in recognition of their service during the COVID-19 pandemic.  It was noted that the Sheriff’s Office and the Nutrition Center stayed open during the pandemic.  The Volunteer Fire Department was also recognized for their service during this time.

The Court voted to mandate that the Sheriff’s Office deliver possession of a Ford F-150 pickup to the newly appointed constable of Precinct 2.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Gilda Morales reported on the need for expansion of the cemetery, noting that a small adjacent area has been identified for possible acquisition.  She also discussed xeriscaping and the painting of the crosses at the cemetery.

In other County business, the Court also:

  • Heard an update on the TxCDBG grant for the food pantry.
  • Approved monthly reports.
  • Heard reports on various County Projects.
  • Approved monthly expenses and payroll.
