Out with the old, in with the old

The Van Horn City Council met in special session last Tuesday to bid goodbye to outgoing Mayor, Pam Young and Councilman Rudy Hinojos, and to swear in former city administrator, Becky Brewster as Mayor and former Councilman, Nuny Morris, to his old seat. Michael Garibay also took the Oath and remains in the seat he was re-elected to. The Oath of Office and Statements of Elected Officials took place immediately after Council canvassed election results and approved payment of election expenses.

The newly installed mayor and council wasted no time tackling a short agenda and voted unanimously to reject the bid submitted by Frank Spencer and Associates for residential water meters. The meters are part of a CDBG grant, but according to Fran Malafronte, City

Administrator, the bid was extremely high and should be rebid. Council then voted to approve and extension of a deadline for City Employees to take their vacations so that they do not lose their earned vacation time due to Covid. Edward Torres, utilities director addressed Council about an employee who tested positive for Covid and asked for direction in dealing with positive employees. It was decided that there would be a meeting between the Mayor and City Administrator to develop a protocol for dealing with employees that test positive for Covid.
